Historical Photographs of the American West: Selected Works by William Henry Jackson, Andrew J. Russell, and Carleton E. Watkins reflects the complex history of the American West, for what the photographs do not show as well as for what they do. These three photographers were commissioned by entrepreneurs who wanted to promote tourism and investment in the West. At the same time, the photographs contributed to the myth of the West as a pristine, unpeopled land, a wilderness where rugged individuals could be free of government interference.
